Awards and Accolades
In recognition of its success and leadership and its reputation for quality and
integrity, Roots has long been cited as one of Canada’s leading iconic brands.
In recent years, Roots has received various accolades for its achievements as an innovative and socially
responsible company. Here is a selection:
2017 – Roots was nominated as Interbrand’s: 150 Iconic Canadian brands.
2016 – Michael and Don receive the Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
2014 – The Retail Council of Canada honours Roots Co-Founders Michael Budman and Don Green with the 2014
Distinguished Retail Founders Award for Lifetime Achievement.
2010 – In the latest study by international brand specialists, Interbrand, entitled Best Canadian Brands 2010: The
Definitive Guide to Canada’s Most Valuable Brands, Roots figures prominently in the section on privatelyheld
companies. “Long considered a Canadian retail brand darling, the Roots brand remains strong and differentiated
in 2010 as a rugged-yet-refined sports and lifestyle brand with a multicultural personality…”
2009 – In a study of Canadian companies and consumer attitudes, entitled Canada’s Most Valued Brands 2009,
Brand Finance gives Roots a “AA” rating and ranks it in the top 20 companies, ahead of such major names as the
CIBC, TD Canada Trust and Shoppers Drug Mart.
2008 – Marketing magazine selects Roots as one of the top 10 icons of Canadian marketing history, profiling the
company in a special feature. “Roots Co-Founders Michael Budman and Don Green have had a huge role in
defining Canadian style on both the domestic and world stages. With a deft combination of authenticity and
celebrity, Budman and Green have turned their passion into a nation-defining brand.”
2008 – In Ikonica: A Field Guide to Canada’s Brandscape, Roots figures prominently in the chapter Movers and
Shakers. “While Roots is continuously reinventing itself (negative heel shoes are a distant memory) based on its
keen cultural radar, the business hews consistently to its core values and lifestyle orientation.”
2008 – A study entitled Competing in the Global Brand Economy: Best Canadian Brands 2008 by brand specialists
Interbrand spotlights Roots. “No company has done a better job of incorporating the essence of Canada’s natural
landscape into its brand. Ensuring that each new product being launched would not appear out of context in
Algonquin Park, the birthplace of the Roots vision, is one example of its commitment to the brand.”
2007 – In a poll of Canadians for Strategy magazine, the advertising and marketing monthly asked consumers:
“Which is the top design-savvy Canadian brand?” Roots came in first place with 68%, followed by Shoppers Drug
Mart, Telus and Cirque du Soleil.
2007 – In a report published by Brand Finance Canada, Canada’s Most Valuable Brands 2007, Roots is ranked the
top brand in the retail sector, and fourth overall.
2006 – Roots wins two major awards for the design of its then new Head Office in Toronto. Both the Association of
Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) pay tribute
to Roots headquarters, honouring it as an exemplary work environment.
2006 – The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) honours Michael Budman and Don Green with the 14th
annual Award of Excellence for Communication and Public Relations.
2005 – The Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends inducts Michael Budman and Don Green in its inaugural year at a
special ceremony in Toronto. They – and the other inductees – were chosen by 200 of their peers from a list of 250
nominees put forward by voters in the business community. Launched by the Toronto chapter of the American
Marketing Association, the MHOL serves as an inspiration and as the go.
