Quality in What We Make
A lot of thought and care go into each product before the Roots name
and logo can go on it. We have prepared this document to give you a better
understanding of how and where we make our merchandise.
Q: Where are Roots products made?
Roots manufactures its products in Canada, (at our own state-of-the-art factory in Toronto) the United States,
Europe, South Asia, Asia and South America. Whether in Canada or abroad, we only work with reputable suppliers
who adhere to the Roots Workplace Code of Conduct.
Q: How is it decided where Roots makes its products?
We search Canada and the rest of the globe for the finest raw materials and facilities as part of our production
process. In some cases, it’s no longer feasible to make certain products in Canada. Sometimes, it’s not even
technically possible to make certain items of a comparable quality in North America. Globalization has shifted a lot
of the raw material, machinery, labour force and technology needed to make quality products to other parts of
Q: Does the fact that Roots makes some products overseas lessen our Canadian identity?
No. Roots is a proudly Canadian company, based in Toronto where it was founded in 1973. We take great pride in
the strong link between Roots and Canada. We are thankful for the support Canadians have long demonstrated for
Roots. The values, beauty and diversity of Canada have always been a major source of inspiration for Roots. We
take pride in our Canadian heritage and identity.
We employ more than 1,500 people directly in Canada and contribute to the employment of thousands more
through our work with suppliers in Canada. Roots is a major supporter of Canada, both on the national level
and on the global stage.
Q: Does Roots use so-called “sweatshops” to make its products?
No. We are committed to ethical business practices including all aspects of our manufacturing process. As such,
we require that working conditions meet our stringent health, safety and labor standards. We insist that the rights,
dignity and well being of all workers making Roots products be respected.
Roots suppliers, both in Canada and abroad, operate according to the Roots Workplace Code of Conduct that
sets forth the minimum conditions we will accept from suppliers in compliance with industry standards.
Q: How do we make sure our suppliers respect the Workplace Code of Conduct?
At our own request, an independent third-party organization, which monitors labour and safety conditions
worldwide, helps ensure that Roots products are made in factories consistent with our Code of Conduct.
Q: Is this issue important to Roots?
Very much so. We consider good labour practices not only the right thing to do on the moral level and true to our
core values but also our responsibility as a successful company.
Q: Are environmental factors a consideration in choosing a supplier?
Yes. As a company long committed to helping the environment, sustainability is an important criterion for Roots in
our choice of suppliers. We strongly favour those who strive to minimize their environmental impact in their
manufacturing process. We also instruct all suppliers to avoid excessive, wasteful packaging when shipping our
